I have cultivated my dream of filmmaking by watching the following Korean movies. They have given me great inspiration. Luckily, I was able to participate as an editor with the directors of these works. By sharing my list of films that I love, I hope movie lovers from around the world will be able to find fascination in Korean films.
Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder is a masterpiece and a foundational textbook for filmmaking. It is inspired by a set of real-life serial murders, of which the actual murderer has only just been caught. What’s shocking is that the film's depiction of the key suspect strongly resembles the real-life murderer. The film stars Song Kang-ho from Parasite (2019).
My Love, My Bride is a cute and adorable romantic comedy. The movie effectively uses film language to depict the heart-fluttering joy of the early stages of romance and the reality of love after marriage. Lee Myung-se is a true visualist, and his unique style stands out in this film.
A Bittersweet Life is the pinnacle of Korean noir. It is an incredibly stylish film, a vintage Kim Jee-woon action-noir, which at times becomes quite philosophical.
The final chapter of Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy. This film transformed actress Lee Young-ae, known for her pure and innocent image, into an incarnation of vengeance. Lady Vengeance is filled with great cinematic variation and exceptional mise-en-scène.
The animated feature film by Yeon Sang-ho, the director of Train to Busan (2016). With aggressive characters placed in a depressing setting, the suspense of the story has you on your toes till the very end. At times incredibly humorous, the film candidly portrays the human condition. The directing prowess of Yeon is truly overwhelming.
